Businesses skip Anthropic's priciest model: Fable 5 is 11%

A founder or finance lead who budgets for AI tools now has public proof, drawn from 70,000 companies, that businesses are passing on the most expensive flagship model, which turns the flagship premium from a default into a decision.

The model people applaud is not the model they pay for

Two months after launch, Anthropic's most expensive model, Fable 5, accounts for about *11% of what customers spend on the company's tools. That is the finding of Ramp, a payments company that tracks what 70,000* businesses actually pay for AI. Anthropic's own cheaper model, Opus 5, released in late July, has already overtaken the flagship in enterprise spending.

The gap has a price tag. In July, Fable 5 generated only *75%* as much revenue as OpenAI's flagship model. The Financial Times, which reported the Ramp data on Sunday, frames it as the end of an era: corporate customers used to reach for the most powerful model by default, and now they don't. Ramp puts it bluntly: with Fable 5, businesses found a new upper bound for what they will spend on AI.

For anyone renewing an AI contract, or watching Anthropic's expected record IPO, this is the number to hold on to. The premium tier is no longer the safe choice, it is the expensive one. Ramp's next monthly index lands in September; the question is whether Opus 5's share keeps climbing past the flagship.

Weak signal

A mystery model called Ox Alpha made headlines this weekend, free on OpenRouter, with no lab willing to claim it. Speculation points at China. Nothing to act on today, but if a lab steps forward, that is a story.

A quiet weekend is the sweep working as intended: fewer stories cleared the bar, and that's the point.
