A frontier-class model, on a desk, not in a cloud

A professional who cannot send client data to the cloud can now pre-order a desktop that Apple says runs frontier-class AI models entirely on the machine.
A frontier-class model, on a desk, not in a cloud
Apple's new Mac Studio is built around a simple promise: the AI stays on the machine. The top configuration carries *512GB* of memory, and Apple says that is enough to run frontier-class AI models entirely on the device, with no round-trip to a cloud.
For a lawyer, a doctor, or a finance professional who cannot send client files to a cloud, that is the difference between using AI and using AI without a leak. Pre-orders open today. The same launch brings a refreshed Mac mini, with the same push toward AI that runs on your desk.
OpenAI's chip does more per watt than Nvidia's
OpenAI's first self-designed chip, called Jalapeño, posted its first measured results at the Hot Chips conference. An independent firm ran the tests inside OpenAI's own lab, on a range of open models. The chip delivered up to *1.9 times* more work per watt than Nvidia's current data-center systems.
The part was co-developed with Broadcom and designed to answer quickly, not just to churn. OpenAI says small deployments begin in its own data centers this year, with more next year. For anyone who pays an AI bill by usage, this is the first hard evidence that the company renting you compute also owns a cheaper way to make it.
A fake think tank, written with ChatGPT
OpenAI says it shut down ChatGPT accounts originating in Russia that were building a fake think tank. The International Burke Institute presented itself as an Israel-based expert community; a review found that on a sample of *36 articles* attributed to its experts, most had been copied from elsewhere, some falsely attributed or machine-translated from a Slavic language.
The operation posted on Substack, Telegram, X, Facebook, and LinkedIn, and some associated Telegram channels had up to *20,000 subscribers*. OpenAI says the campaign had limited reach so far. The point is the structure: an apparently credible institution, manufactured in advance, ready to lend authority to narratives later.
Weak signal
OpenAI shipped an Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex: workspace admins can manage users, limits, and reports from a conversation. It is live today, but no corroborating page carries a verifiable figure, so it stays a signal. A reverse engineer's write-up on Android's new photo provenance stamps reached the top of Hacker News; his site does not answer from this server, so it could not be verified today.
The frontier is moving onto machines people own. The next number to watch is what that does to the price of intelligence.
