Pentagon gets ChatGPT and Grok; Instagram labels AI personas

# AI For All ### Tuesday, September 1, 2026
As of today, a defense contractor or a Pentagon civilian can run ChatGPT and Grok inside the military's secure portal, on sensitive unclassified work, without the data collection that comes with consumer accounts.
The Pentagon opened its fence, and Claude is still outside
The Pentagon launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government on Monday, inside GenAI.mil, the secure AI portal it opened late last year. Google's Gemini was already there. The portal has passed *1.7 million unique users, and it is built to serve the department's 3 million* military members, civilians, and contractors.
The detail that matters is who is missing. Claude was supposed to join the portal, but the dispute over safety guardrails derailed it, four days after a federal judge called the Pentagon's blacklist of Anthropic illegal. The department says it wants a multi-model platform and no vendor lock-in. The lab it locked out is the one it is still fighting in court.
For anyone who works with the Defense Department, frontier AI is now a standard tool of the job. For everyone else, it is a signal about where government AI is heading: inside the fence, on approved models, and nowhere near consumer data collection.
Instagram makes AI personas carry a label, or lose their reach
Instagram announced Monday that accounts featuring a fully AI-generated person must now say so. The old "AI creator" label becomes "AI-generated profile," a badge that sits right under the handle and shows up on posts, reels, and stories. Accounts that do not label themselves get forcibly demoted: their posts stop being recommended to anyone who does not already follow them.
The labeling tool is already live for everyone. Detection of unlabeled accounts, and the demotions, arrive in the coming weeks. Instagram says the rule answers what it kept hearing: people meeting a profile that seemed human, and finding out later that the person featured was generated.
For a marketer running an AI persona, the calculation just changed: label the account and keep the reach, or hide and watch the recommendations disappear. For everyone else, the feed gets a little more honest. AI used to edit photos or polish captions does not need the label, so the rule stays narrow.
DeepSeek's budget model learns to see
DeepSeek released a vision version of its Flash model on Monday, the cheap workhorse of its V4 family. The weights are public, and the model also works through the usual DeepSeek API. Send it a screenshot, a photo of a document, a chart: it reads them like text.
DeepSeek's own evaluation says the vision version is substantially better at screen-reading agent tasks than the text-only Flash, while staying comparable on text-only work. Those results are DeepSeek's, not an independent lab's, and they were not independently verified before publication, so treat the improvement as a signal rather than a verdict.
For a founder who already pays DeepSeek for cheap API calls, image understanding just arrived at budget prices, no new contract, no new vendor. For anyone who wanted to run it privately, the weights are a download away.
The meeting notetaker that just went free
Circleback, the Y Combinator-backed meeting notetaker, now has a free tier: AI notes for unlimited meetings, *30 days* of searchable history, mobile and Apple Watch apps, Slack and Linear integrations. No card required.
Before Monday, there was no free tier at all. The market for meeting notes is crowded, and free tiers are becoming the entry price, but this one is usable immediately and unlimited on the core feature.
For a consultant or a manager who lives in back-to-back calls, that is a real option at zero cost, and a useful benchmark for what note-takers now have to offer to get your attention.
Weak signal
Today is the day: hardware security keys become mandatory on every individual Daybreak account, Blue and Red tiers alike. OpenAI announced the deadline on August 10, and nothing has slipped. If you or your team use Daybreak, the key needs to be on now.
The Pentagon put frontier AI inside its fence this week; the question for September is which agencies follow.
